Frequently Asked Questions About CWF-UV5

Q: What distinguishes CWF-UV5 from other finishes?
A: CWF-UV5 is made with Flood’s Penetrol, which has protected and restored valuable exterior wood for over 30 years.  Penetrol delivers unsurpassed deep penetration into wood leading to rich, lasting natural beauty while guarding against the harsh effects of water and sun.  It is also made with trans-oxides pigments to effectively absorb and block the harmful UV rays of the sun.

Q: How long will CWF-UV5 last?
A:
CWF-UV5 is guaranteed against peeling, blistering and graying for 5 years on siding and 3 years on decking.

Q: Can CWF-UV5 be tinted?
A:
Yes.  CWF-UV5 is available in Natural and Cedar but is tintable to 4 additional colors, both gallons and pails.

Q: Can CWF-UV5 be applied to new wood?
A:
No.  New wood should be allowed to weather for at least one year.  This weathering process breaks down the mil glaze, allows excess moisture to escape and open the grain so that a finish can penetrate properly.  It also allows natural chemicals extractives in the wood that cause staining to escape.  Use, Flood’s New Wood Defender to protect and stabilize the wood during the weathering period.

Q: What is the best method to apply CWF-UV5?
A: Nylon or polyester brush, hand or power roller with a ¾ synthetic nap roller) stain brush or airless sprayer. Using 1500-1800 psi of pressure and a .017 to .021 orifice spray tip.  Back brush or backroll the surface after spraying to assure penetration and uniformity.

Q: How many coats of CWF-UV5 should be applied?
A: One coat is sufficient for most applications, however, severely weathered wood or rough sawn siding may require two coats.  If two coats are required apply as a wet-on-wet application.  DO NOT APPLY A SECOND COAT IF THE FIRST COAT HAS DRIED FOR MORE THAN 20 MINUTES.

Q: Can CWF-UV5 be used in a garden sprayer?
A: No.  CWF-UV5 is too thick for a garden sprayer application.

Q: How do I avoid glazing or shiny spots of CWF-UV5 on deck boards?
A: Glazing and shiny spots are caused by incomplete penetration of the finish caused by puddle areas in low spots and cupped sections of the boards.   Inspect the deck surface approximately 20 minutes after the CWF-UV5 application and wipe or brush out any areas that still look wet.  This procedure will eliminate the problem. Some shiny areas may remain on knots and hard grain, but the gloss will dull down with exposure.
