Q: How should new wood be prepared for staining with Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain?
A: The ideal time to stain new wood is one to three months after installation. Some new wood surfaces, like smooth cedar, can have a glazed, shiny surface, called mill glaze that prevents maximum penetration of Semi-Transparent Stain. All new wood, especially decks, should be prepared with Flood’s PowerLift (1qt to 1 ½ gal water), StainStrip (1:1 with water) or FloodPro Stripper/Cleaner (1 qt to 1 gal water) according to directions to remove the mill glaze.
Prior to staining, we suggest that you complete a ‘water test.’ Sprinkle a small amount of water on the wood surface, if the water absorbs rapidly, the wood is ready to be stained. If the water does not absorb rapidly, allow the wood to weather longer. If the water does not absorb rapidly, allow the wood to weather longer or repeat preparation steps using PowerLift, StainStrip or FloodPro Stripper/Cleaner.
For New Cedar - Should be treated with Seasonite New Wood Treatment for the first year of weathering, according to directions.
Q: How should weathered wood be prepared for staining with Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain?
A: Uncoated weathered wood requires a thorough cleaning before staining. Use Flood’s PowerLift with a pressure washer or stiff bristle brush to remove loose wood fibers, dirt and other surface contaminants, prior to applying Flood Semi-Transparent Stain.
Q: How should previously coated or stained wood be prepared for staining with Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain?
A: Flood Semi-Transparent Stain can only be applied to bare wood surfaces or weathered semi-transparent surfaces that are sufficiently porous. Previous paint, solid hide stain, or varnish must be removed completely and thoroughly with Flood’s PowerLift, StainStrip or FloodPro Stripper/Cleaner before proceeding.

Q: What is the recommended temperature for applying Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain?
A: The ideal time to apply Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain is when the temperatures are consistently between 50-80 degrees Fahrenheit, for a minimum of 48 hours consecutively, including night time temperatures. Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected with 48 hours of your application. Avoid applying it in direct sunlight.
Q: Why can’t Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain be used on screened-in areas that are outdoors (not indoors)?
A: Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain contains mildewcides and petroleum distillates that require sunlight and proper ventilation to cure. Therefore, we do not recommend Flood Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain to be used in a screened-in area.

A: We recommend a two coat application. For a more transparent look, add up to 1 pint of water per gallon of stain for the second-coat application.

A: Coverage on rough surfaces will be approximately 150-250 square feet per gallon of Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Stain.
