I’m so happy to share with you our project of staining our deck. Our deck is our “great room”, we spend a lot of time out on it during warm weather. We eat, exercise, read, kids love to have parties & camp out on it. Although we enjoy the deck we are faced occasionally with maintaining it.
You can see from the before picture it was no small task due to size of the deck plus living in New England presented new set of challenges such as frequent rain and temperatures drops. But after getting a couple of quotes from professional painters we decided to do it ourselves.
I did a lot of research on different types of stains & decided on Flood Solid Color Deck & Siding Stain. What convinced me was one step application, no primers, easy to apply, & easy to wash off from hands, brushes and most of all the 5 year guarantee. I can not imagine staining this size deck every year or even every other year.
I had a sample of the house paint & the paint store was able to match the color fairly close to the color of the siding. We measured the deck & got 5 gallons of stain to cover the railings and floor with two coats.
Flood company has a great website that tells you exactly step by step what to do, so we were ready for the challenge. First we washed the dirt & mildew with deck cleaner which we spread with a mop & brushed off the excess dirt with a brushes. We then power washed it and let it dry for a week.
After that we simply applied the stain with brushes. We did the railings first, then the floor, then the 2 stair cases, and lastly the board around the outside. It was a great time we spent working together & being outdoors, sharing stories and listening to music.
Our deck looks great! We are proud we were able to do it ourselves. Thank you Flood Company!
