Bigger Decks are "In"
March 2007
Every February the National Home Builders Association (NHBA) hosts a fabulous event, the International Builder’s Show (IBS), for those in the building/remodeling industry. More than one million square feet of exhibit hall is utilized, chock-full of the newest in building products, materials, trends, techniques, fixtures and appliances. Mind you, without the right shoes the show could be an absolute nightmare—I must’ve walked about 10 miles over the course of three days viewing all of the latest and greatest in building trends and products! The largest trend at IBS was the continuing popularity of outdoor living. For the first time I saw high-quality exotic-wood kitchen cabinets (think teak and cypress) made specifically for the outdoors, complete with stainless-steel hinges to withstand the elements. It’s so exciting for homeowners to contemplate their design philosophy and bringing that love of design from the indoors, out. Also at this year’s IBS, I noticed that decks are bigger than ever! The architecture of the deck is changing, too—designers are using wood railings, low walls, plantings, pergolas and incorporating second and even third decks to create smaller, more intimate spaces. But, of course, these outdoor entertaining altars need proper protection and maintenance to keep their beauty. The Flood Company’s CWF-UltraLast™ Premium Wood Cleaner is a powerful cleaner and brightener made for all exterior wood surfaces, including decking, benches and other outdoor wood products. The solution removes surface and ground-in dirt while restoring a vibrant look to the wood. And, coinciding with the smart eco-friendly decision trend, the cleaner won’t harm surrounding plants and shrubbery.Speaking of eco-friendly decisions, homeowners should opt for plants, foliage and shrubbery that are native to their area as they will require less watering and maintenance. In addition, I couldn’t help but notice the strong presence of smarter storm water management systems, which utilizes water collection to irrigate the yard and move water away from the home’s foundation, the latter of which could lead to major trouble. And what about those outdoor beds? Homeowners are forgoing the traditional hammock and dreaming big with weather-resistant bedding materials. However you dream it, a backyard makeover or even just a freshening up of your existing space is going to ensure a warm-weather season filled with family, friends and fun.
