Question:

I’d like to build a new deck. How do I find a qualified and responsible contractor to start the process so I can enjoy the deck by late spring?

Answer:

Hiring a reputable contractor is an important job that needn’t be stressful. First, talk to friends, neighbors or family members who have had similar work done. You may also want to speak with building inspectors, trade association representatives or even local hardware store representatives for their recommendations. Once you’ve narrowed the field to 1-3 contractors, ask each professional to visit your home to assess the project and to provide a written, detailed estimate. Also ask the contractor for references from recently completed jobs and call the homeowners. Ask questions like, “Did the contractor complete the job in the stated amount of time?” “Did the contractor’s estimate match the final cost and, if not, how much did it differ?” “Was the contractor messy or tidy?” Remember to obtain copies of the contractor’s license, as well as liability and worker’s compensation insurance. Call your state contractor’s board to make sure his/her license is in good standing, then check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure there are no outstanding complaints or suits against him/her. Check the term of the insurance. If the insurance term is due to expire during your project, get proof that the insurance has been continued. From there, offer the job!
