Question:

I’m thinking about adding an outdoor kitchen to my backyard entertaining space. What is available in terms of product?

Answer:

How exciting! An outdoor kitchen can greatly enhance and change the way you and your family entertain. First, you have some important questions to ask yourself: Are you in a geographic location where cooking outside is a year-round possibility? How much space can you dedicate to your outdoor kitchen? Do you entertain large numbers of family and friends regularly? Are you looking to move beyond grilling basics and get more adventurous with your outdoor cooking as well as the meal prep itself? If you answered 'yes' to many of the questions posed above, then an outdoor kitchen is right for you.

As far as product recommendations go, I just attended the National Hardware Show in Orlando, Florida, a trade show that focuses on lawn and garden products. If you are interested in a built-in grilling space, consider an outdoor cabinet manufacturer whose products are made from marine-quality polymers as they are weatherproof and stand up to harsh direct sunlight. If you are looking for a mobile or stationary grill surround there are many options to consider, including materials made of cast stone, concrete, granite, metal or stainless steel. For the at-home bartender, consider a portable bar caddy, ice maker, beer dispenser and undercounter refrigerator. For storage options, you may be interested in a teak storage chest that has hinged front doors to hold cookware, table linens and glassware. For sports fans or movie buffs, certain televisions are now made exclusively for outdoor use and can weather even the most ferocious storm. One television I saw features a screen that automatically adjusts contrast to allow clear viewing in the brightest of sunlight. And remember, the original summertime altar is the deck itself, so be sure and up-to-date with your exterior woodcare maintenance.

I hope I’ve inspired you rather than overwhelmed you with choices. Whatever direction you choose to go in, enjoy your tricked out outdoor kitchen and remember to save me a seat!
