A two-part protection system for teak and other boating woods

Deks Olje® is a two-part solution to the problem of protecting and maintaining beautiful boating woods against the deteriorating effects of sun, salt, wind and foot traffic. Deks Olje #1® can be used alone for the natural, oiled look that many boaters prefer. However, when you cover it with Deks Olje #2®, you get a durable, glossy finish that won't break, blister or craze like other marine coatings after only a few months exposure.

Where To Use

Deks Olje#1
• A highly penetrating oil, leaves a rich matte finish that saturates, seals and stabilizes wood to prevent cracking.

Deks Olje #2
• Used over Deks Olje #1, provides a hard, glossy finish that's especially beautiful on teak caprails, skylights, companionway hatches and other wood trim.

Preparation
• Remove all of the old finish.
• Prep the wood using Dekswood® Cleaner & Brightener. Dekswood neutralizes the surface after using strippers or bleach. It also removes oils from new wood, removes dirt and restores color and brightness to old wood.
• Sand the wood with open coat paper no finer than #100.
• Remove all blemishes from the wood. Otherwise, Deks Olje will highlight them.
• Finish-sand with the grain.

Application
• Plan to spend most of the day applying Deks Olje #1.
• Apply by brush or roller. A foam brush can be used on smaller areas.
• Do not thin.
• Start by apply Deks Olje #1 to an area that can be coated in 15 minutes.
• Apply one coat every 15 minutes. As one coat is absorbed, apply another. (If wood is still wet, brush out the standing material two or three times to help it penetrate). Do not allow to dry between coats.
• Continue until the last application does not penetrate within 30 minutes after several brushings. At this point, wipe up all excess with a rag which is slightly damp with Deks Olje #1. A proper Deks Olje #1 application should require many coats over at least a 6 hour time period.
• Deks Olje #1 will stain metal fittings and fiberglass. Be sure to clean these surfaces before it dries. If Deks Olje #1 has dried on fiberglass, it can be removed with any paint remover formulated for use on fiberglass.
• Wait three days before finishing with Deks Olje #2
• For Deks Olje #2, apply three to six coats, depending on anticipated wear and exposure.
• Allow at least 12 hours of good drying between coats (i.e. one coat per day. Three to six coats should be applied within one month).
• For smoothest finish, lightly wet sand with Deks Olje #1 and #600 sand paper between coats 5 and 6.
• Allow good air circulation for drying. If possible, allow to dry three to four days before use.
• Do not apply in wet weather or late in the day when dew or fog may be expected.
• Deks Olje #2 will stain metal fittings and fiberglass. Be sure to clean these surfaces before it dries. If Deks Olje #2 has dried on fiberglass, it can be removed with any paint remover formulated for use on fiberglass.

Dry Time
• For Deks Olje #1: Allow three days before putting the boat in service or finishing with Deks Olje #2
• For Deks Olje #2: Allow at least three to four days before putting the boat in service after finishing with Deks Olje #2.

Clean Up
• Deks Olje #1 and Deks Olje #2, while still wet, are easily removed from adjacent surfaces with paint thinner. Brushes and rollers should be cleaned promptly with paint thinner.
• Dried spills must be removed with paint and varnish remover.
• Danger: Rags, steel wool or waste soaked with this product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately after use, place rags, steel wool or waste in a sealed water-filled metal container.
