1. YOU WILL NEED -
- Flood® CWF®-UV5* or another Flood finish product
- Broom or leaf-blower
- Plastic drop cloths
- Rags
- Large bucket (5 gallon capacity or equivalent)
- 5 gallon plastic roller grid
- Brush (4” natural bristle brush)
- Long-handled roller (roller 1/4”– 3/4” nap cover), long-handled stain brush or pad or airless sprayer** (.011 - .015 fluid tip, 1200-1800 psi)
- Chemical resistant rubber gloves
- Safety goggles
- Protective clothing
- Masking tape
Application is made easier with 2 or more people working together.
PLEASE NOTE: Although this exterior wood finishing project guide uses an exterior wood deck and a deck protector product as its example, the same process may be used to finish other exterior wood surfaces, such as wood siding, wood fences and outdoor wood furniture.

* CWF-UV5 is a an exterior wood finishing product for use on pressure-treated pine, cedar and redwood that has weathered for one year. It enhances the natural look of the wood with subtle color.
How to determine whether to use CWF-UV5:
There are a few things to think about when deciding on the type of finish you want – the look you are trying to achieve, the condition of the wood and the maintenance you are comfortable with in the future.
Flood CWF-UV5 needs to be applied to a bare wood surface. Does your deck or wood surface already have a clear, natural, semi-transparent or solid color finish that needs to be removed? Flood StainStrip® removes all exterior finishes, even 100% acrylics. Please refer to the on-line tutorial “Stripping a Finish from Exterior Wood” for information on preparing the surface for applying a wood finish or deck protector.
Here's a simple test to help you check whether your exterior wood has an existing clear or natural finish on it: Sprinkle a drop or so of water onto your deck surface. If it absorbs into the wood in just a few seconds’ time it probably is not coated. If water beads for longer than a few minutes before drying, your deck or wood surface is likely to have an existing finish.
